Redbox free rental

I have SwagGrabber on my RSS feed. She posts a lot of deals and freebies, some on the internet and others in physical stores. She’s been posting about free Redbox rentals for awhile now but Jeff and I had never tried it.

Today we rented City of Ember. The promo code worked and the movie was free. Unfortunately, the movie was disappointing. Based on the preview, I was expecting some grandiose statement about life and about conquering environmental concerns, external conflicts, etc. For a kids/family movie, it was decent. But as an adult looking for content, it fell short. Oh, well. At least we didn’t waste any money on it.

If you have Redbox in your area and are interested in a free movie, check SwagGrabber’s website. She posts a free rental code once a week.

Pasta salad!

My developing frugality skills finally paid off. hehe

Over the weekend, my brother bought this really nasty Fry’s brand imitation cheese. Sorry Josh, but it was nasty. I looked on the website, and Fry’s has a satisfaction guarantee on all of their store brands. This morning, I took two packages of the “cheese” back to Fry’s and asked for a refund or store credit. Even though I didn’t have the receipt, they offered me a cash refund. Yay!

Fry’s has their Fry’s brand “real” cheese on sale right now, so we bought a block of that instead. Walmart had pasta salad noodles discounted and combined with the ingredients we have been saving at home, we’re having pasta salad for dinner! It’s been ages (well, several months) since we’ve had pasta salad and we’ve been scraping the bottom of the cupboards for food to eat the past couple days. The pasta salad cost us a few minutes of time to return the icky cheese and $2.25 for the noodles. The olives, frozen peas, and salad dressing was being saved for this day.

Hurray for yummy dinners! This will be so much better than hot cereal or canned chili…

Free Quiznos sub

I wasn’t sure if I was going to post today, but when I found this offer, I had to share.

Visit this Quizno’s site and register for their email list to receive a free small sub. The first million people will receive a printable coupon which can be redeemed at their stores. Hubby and I each signed up so we’re getting a free lunch tomorrow!

Thanks to SwagGrabber for posting about this deal.

Books, books, and more books

I love to read. I’m addicted to books. If we could afford it, I’d get a job at Barnes and Noble just so I could reinvest in their store by cashing my paycheck and then shopping for books. šŸ˜‰ That’s how much I love to read.

Unfortunately, my budget does not support my book habit. I love libraries, but the two nearest us have a very minimal selection. They don’t carry 95% of the books that I’ve looked for. Earlier this week, hubby and I decided to visit the public library in the next town over. We signed up for library cards and came home with a huge stack of books.

I have developed a system to organize my future reading lists. Whenever I read a book recommendation on a blog, I visit Amazon’s website or the author’s website. If the book looks like one I will enjoy, I add it to my Amazon wish list. On Monday, I printed off my wish list and then searched the library’s website to find the call letters for each book. When we visited the library, I just had to go through the rows and pick up each book. Simple!

I’ve thought about requesting the library to pull the books for me, but I enjoy browsing. That way, I can pull any additional books that look promising. This last trip, I only allowed myself a couple extra books, as my reading list was already quite long. As I continue reading blogs and receiving recommendations, I’ll add titles to my library wish list on Amazon. This way I’ll always have a list of highly recommended books to read!

This is the stack of books we brought home this week. The pile on the left is mine and the right stack is hubby’s. The book standing upright is the one I’m currently reading. Have I mentioned that I love books?

Sick, but happy

I woke up sick this morning. All of my plans were discarded as I’ve spent most of the day resting and reading. We had big plans of going to the post office and the library, but didn’t realize until late last night that today is a federal holiday! Happy Presidents Day!

Hubby has been very attentive today. I’m glad he’s home with me when I am sick. Actually, I’ve been very thankful that we’ve had all of this time together over the past two months, but I seem to appreciate his presence even more when I’m not feeling well. He even ran over to the store this morning to purchase some comfort foods for our lunch. I am very blessed that the Lord saw best to match the two of us for life.

In other news, I am absolutely thrilled that I now have a registered domain name. Thanks to SwagGrabber’s blog, I found out that GoDaddy is selling domain names for 99 cents! With tax, it comes out to $1.19 for a one year domain registration. If you’re interested in building a website, I strongly suggest that you take advantage of this deal. Jeff has never seen domain registration so cheaply priced. The sale code is LOVE99.

This means that my website address is now http://www.adventisthomemaker.com. Hubby changed some settings on Blogger so that my blogger address redirects to my website. Someday I will purchase hosting and set up a full website, but for now, it just includes my blog. Even though my brain is fuzzy today, I can’t help but start brainstorming ways I will utilize my own website. Recipes? A photography gallery? Bible studies? There are lots of options!

No garage sales? No problem!

God has blessed our willingness to sacrifice some of our possessions. I have been leaning toward an attitude of ā€œless is moreā€ ever since I started being a housewife. Fewer possessions mean less maintenance, less time wasted, and less cleaning. This time of unemployment has prompted us to sell some things to raise money for paying bills. Jeff has been out of work for 7 weeks and we have not yet missed a payment.

I wanted to mention two ways that weā€™ve been selling things.

Craigslist – This website has been hit or miss, depending on the item being sold. Our Wii was snapped up very quickly, but I havenā€™t had any luck selling clothes. Weā€™ve made $335 on Craigslist.

Half.com – An Ebay affiliate, Half.com is an incredibly easy website to use if you already have an Ebay account. The website hosts a virtual yard sale for books, movies, music, and video games. All you do is enter the ISBN of the items you are selling, list the itemā€™s condition, and select a price. When the seller buys an item, you are notified immediately and mail out the item. Half.com reimburses you for a set shipping amount, takes a small commission, and deposits the balance into your bank account. In the last 24 hours, we sold four video games and one DVD for a total of $104.65!

Still applying

Hubby and I applied for quite a few jobs today. We found listings for jobs online and he still has a stack to work through. I hope one of the jobs comes through. Hubby has two interviews tomorrow, so we’ll see what happens.

I also found a job I want to apply for, which would require a commitment of 20 hours per week. I’m out of time today, as we leave for Bible study in 45 minutes. Tomorrow I’ll be working on my cover letter and resume so that I can apply for the job.

On a completely unrelated note, several people around the web have posted links to get a free bottle of Suave. The offer is only good today, so if you’re interested, make sure you sign up for the coupon soon!

Free date!

My husband and I don’t really go out on traditional “dates.” We’ve never really had the money to spend on activities. Instead, we’ve been content to stay at home and watch a movie (Netflix is cheap!) or play board games.

While driving to work one day, hubby noticed the Phoenix Art Museum. I went online to find out how much admission costs and discovered they have free admission every Tuesday evening! Date night!

Two Tuesdays ago, we drove over to the Museum. Sure enough, there was free admission for the general public. We spent a little over two hours wandering through the exhibits. We quickly walked around the 43rd Annual Cowboy Artists of America Exhibit. Some of those paintings had absolutely gorgeous skies!

We spent a lot of time in the European painting exhibit. This was my favorite painting of the evening:

The display said that it was a George Romney painting titled Anne Birch. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information on the internet about this particular painting.

We’re planning on visit the Art Museum next month for this exhibit. Not only is the museum free on Tuesdays, but it’s a creative, mind stimulating, and fun date. Now I’m on the lookout for other places that have free admission!
